The Driveway Mercy

When an inconvenience becomes a gift, and an ordinary flat tyre becomes a quiet reminder of God's protection

The Driveway Mercy
๐Ÿ“–โ€œThe Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul.โ€
โ€” Psalms 121:7 NKJV

I'd barely made it out of the driveway this morning when something in the sound of my car caught my attention. A strange noise. A rhythm slightly off. The kind of small thing I could easily have dismissed if I hadn't been paying attention. Something in me said, Turn back. So I did. There it was. The tyre, completely flat.

At first glance, it was simply an inconvenience. Plans interrupted. Somewhere I needed to be. A tyre that now needed attention. Yet almost immediately, another thought came. Yesterday. Yesterday afternoon, I had driven home from Silverdale on that very same tyre. I had travelled along the motorway in the afternoon rush, moving at ninety or a hundred kilometres per hour, surrounded by other vehicles, simply trusting that my little car would carry me safely home.

What if the tyre had given way then? What if then had been the moment rather than now? I dread to think what could have followed. Yet it didn't happen there. It happened here. At home. In my driveway. Safe.

Instead of being stranded beside a busy motorway, frightened and vulnerable, I was home, where Clive could simply step in and sort it without danger or drama. Suddenly, the inconvenience looked different. It looked a little like mercy. There is something profoundly tender about that, isn't there?

Not the tyre itself, of course. Not every inconvenience needs to be turned into some grand spiritual lesson. Sometimes a flat tyre is simply a flat tyre. Yet sometimes, when we look backwards, we can see the fingerprints of God in the timing. The protection we never knew we needed. The danger that never became our story. The ordinary moment in which something went wrong in precisely the safest place for it to go wrong.

Today, those words from Psalm 121 feel wonderfully literal. My going out. My coming in. Yesterday's journey home. This morning's tiny attempt to leave the driveway. All of it held beneath a care I cannot always see.

I keep thinking about that strange little sound too. How easy it would have been to ignore itโ€”turn the radio up, keep driving, tell myself I was imagining things, decide I didn't have time to investigate. Instead, I listened. There is something here I don't want to rush past. God's guidance does not always arrive dramatically. Sometimes there is no thunder, no flashing sign, no extraordinary intervention. Sometimes it is simply the wisdom to notice that something sounds different. A quiet prompting. A hesitation. A sense that perhaps I should turn around.

Holy Spirit is wonderfully able to get our attention in the ordinary rhythms of life, and I am learning again that listening matters.

Today I am grateful. Grateful for my husband's steadiness in these moments. Grateful for ears that listened. Grateful that yesterday's motorway journey ended safely in my driveway. Grateful that what could have happened somewhere dangerous happened instead somewhere safe. Most of all, I am grateful for a God whose care reaches into places I may never fully know.

How many times has He protected me when I never realised I needed protecting? How many prayers have been answered that I never thought to pray? How many disasters have simply not happened, leaving no dramatic testimony behind them, only an ordinary Tuesday, an uneventful journey home, a safe arrival? Perhaps some of God's sweetest mercies are the stories we will never know how to tell.

Today, however, I caught a glimpse of one. It looked like a flat tyre. Sitting safely in my driveway. And somehow, what began as an inconvenience became a gift.

Rest well today. You've captured something beautifulโ€”not the extraordinary, but the profoundly tender mercies of an ordinary Tuesday. The ones that hold us when we don't even know we're falling. --- โœจ This is ready to paste into your /manage โ†’ New story form on patriziaschwartz.com. ๐Ÿ’ก Reflection
  • Have there been inconveniences in my life that, looking back, were actually forms of protection?
  • How often do I notice and thank God for the things that didn't happen?
  • Am I attentive to the quiet promptings of Holy Spirit in ordinary moments?
  • Where might God be inviting me to see interruption through the lens of His care rather than frustration?
  • What seemingly ordinary mercy can I thank Him for today?
๐ŸŽบ Affirmation

I am held in the faithful care of God. I do not need to understand every unseen danger to trust the One who watches over my going out and my coming in. I will remain attentive to Holy Spirit, grateful for ordinary mercies, and willing to recognise that sometimes an interruption is not merely an inconvenience. Sometimes, it is grace waiting for me in the driveway.

๐Ÿ™Œ Closing prayer

Father, thank You for the mercies I see and the countless mercies I never will. Thank You for bringing me safely home yesterday and for allowing this tyre to reveal itself today, in the safety of my own driveway. Thank You for Clive, for his steady presence and practical care. Thank You for the little sound that caught my attention and for the wisdom to turn around rather than keep driving. Teach me to recognise Your goodness not only in spectacular answers to prayer, but in ordinary protection, quiet promptings and dangers that never become stories. Holy Spirit, keep my heart attentive to Your leading. Help me listen when something seems slightly out of rhythm, and give me wisdom to respond rather than dismiss Your gentle prompting. Today I choose gratitude. What looked like an inconvenience has reminded me that I am living beneath the watchful care of a faithful Father. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
